EU enforcement actions highlight growing regulatory scrutiny across the European Economic Area
In the first quarter of 2026, regulators across the European Union issued recall orders for 12 consumer electronics and household products after finding violations of the EU RoHS Directive and the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation.
These enforcement actions, announced via EU Safety Gate alerts, underscore the increasing attention European authorities are placing on hazardous substances, supply chain transparency, and product safety within the EU market.
RoHS and POPs: why these regulations trigger market withdrawals
The EU RoHS Directive restricts the use of specific hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium in electrical and electronic equipment sold in the European Economic Area. The Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation prohibits or severely limits chemicals that persist in the environment and pose long-term risks to human health and ecosystems.
Products found to contain restricted substances above allowable thresholds must be withdrawn from the EU market, often resulting in recalls, financial losses, and supply chain disruption for manufacturers and importers.

Products recalled during Q1 2026 include power banks, headphones, kettles, thermometers, and hair straighteners—demonstrating that compliance challenges continue to impact companies of all sizes and across multiple product categories.

Hair Straightener
Description:
The solders in the product have an excessive concentration of lead (measured value up to 28% by weight). Lead poses a risk to the environment.

Description:
In similar models of kettle by the importer, excessive concentration of short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were found. The importer cannot rule out that this product does not have an excessive concentration of SCCPs. SCCPs persist in the environment, are toxic to aquatic organisms at low concentrations and bio-accumulate in wildlife and humans, posing a risk to human health and the environment.
